Failures and Pivots

Detailed documentation of claims that failed validation and the lessons learned.

The 12-Year Journey

These failures are part of a decade-long research journey. Each dead end led to insights that eventually produced verified results.

2012: Phase 1 - NNC Discovery

Found Grossman-Katz book, started exploring

2013-2015: Phase 2 - Single-Frame Hypothesis

Failure #1, #3: Bigeometric singularities, coordinate trap

2016-2020: Phase 3-5 - Meta-Calculus + Gauge Insight

Discovered scheme invariance analogy

2022-2023: Phase 6-7 - MOO + Composite

Failure #2, #4: k=-0.7 dark energy, componentwise Q3

2024: Phase 8-9 - Spectral Gap Verification

Finally verified: 9/9 tests pass, 7.7x log-space speedup

2024: Reframing - 6 Key Mathematical Findings

External analysis: stability not enhancement, mimicker not solver

2025: CASCADE Singularity Proof

21-simulation validation: 61.9% win rate, 93.4% best improvement

Why Document Failures?

Scientific progress depends on knowing what does NOT work. Publishing only successes creates survivorship bias and wastes resources as others repeat the same failed experiments.

If it is not falsifiable and you do not run simulations, it is BS.

- The principle that saved this project

Failure #1: Bigeometric Singularity Removal

AI-Generated Claim

The bigeometric derivative of the Ricci scalar is bounded even at r=0, suggesting singularities are purely coordinate artifacts.

The Test

We tested the most basic property - derivative of a constant:

python
1# Test: D_BG[constant] should equal 0
2constant = lambda x: 5.0
3result = bigeometric_derivative(constant, x=2.0)
4print(f"D_BG[5] = {result}")
5# Expected: 0
6# Actual: exp(0) = 1.0
Result

D_BG[constant] = 1, not 0. This breaks linearity and makes bigeometric calculus incompatible with tensor calculus. The entire singularity removal claim was based on a broken foundation.

Lesson Learned

Always test basic properties (constants, limits, edge cases) before making grand claims. A simple test invalidated months of work.

What this enabled: Spectral gap verification - shifted focus from grand claims to verifiable properties.

Failure #2: k = -0.7 Dark Energy

AI-Generated Claim

Setting meta-weight k = -0.7 produces an effective equation of state matching dark energy observations without exotic matter.

The Test

We checked against Big Bang Nucleosynthesis constraints:

BBN constraint: |k| < 0.03 (conservative)

Proposed value: k = -0.7

Violation factor: 23.3x

Result

k = -0.7 would predict wrong helium-4 and deuterium abundances. Chi-squared fit to supernova data: >> 100 (catastrophic). Claim retracted.

Lesson Learned

Any modification to cosmology must satisfy ALL observational constraints simultaneously, not just the one you are trying to explain.

What this enabled: k(L) empirical formula - retained as valid diagnostic tool without overclaiming physics mechanism.

Failure #3: Alternative Calculus = New Physics

AI-Generated Claim

Using alternative calculus provides genuinely new physics. The t^2k factor represents a physical modification, not just a coordinate transformation.

The Analysis

Consider the coordinate transformation tau = t^(1-k)/(1-k):

Lmeta=38πGat2ka˙2\mathcal{L}_{meta} = -\frac{3}{8\pi G} a \cdot t^{2k} \cdot \dot{a}^2

Under transformation: dt = t^k dtau. Substituting:

Lmeta(τ)=Lclassical(τ)\mathcal{L}_{meta}(\tau) = \mathcal{L}_{classical}(\tau)
Result

The t^2k factor is exactly the Jacobian of a time coordinate transformation. This is not new physics - it is the same physics in different coordinates.

Lesson Learned

General covariance means physics should not depend on coordinate choice. If your effect can be removed by coordinate transformation, it is not physical.

What this enabled: Log-space coordinate transform - coordinate transformation as tool, not new physics.

Failure #4: Componentwise Meta-Derivatives (Q3)

The Hypothesis

If global meta-time reparametrization preserves unitarity, perhaps we can apply meta-calculus componentwise to wave function components.

The Test

Q0-Q2 (Global)

Norm drift: < 1%

Status: SAFE

Q3 (Componentwise)

Norm drift: ~65%

Status: BREAKS UNITARITY

Lesson Learned

Quantum mechanics has rigid structural requirements. You can reparametrize time globally (Q1-Q2) but not locally on individual components (Q3).

What this enabled: Constancy diagnostic - identifying function classes via D_BG[x^n] = e^n verification.

The Pivots

From "Right Calculus" to "Calculus Ensemble"

Before: Looking for the correct calculus that makes problems disappear.

After: Using families of calculi to test which features are real vs artifacts.

From "New Physics" to "Diagnostic Tool"

Before: Alternative calculi provide genuinely new physics.

After: Alternative calculi are a diagnostic - if something survives ALL calculi, it is likely real.

From "Parameter Fitting" to "Classical Limit"

Before: Searching for k, s values that explain dark energy.

After: Accepting k to 0, s to 0 (classical) is preferred, but the methodology is the contribution.
